Today we are living in the mobile era. People who can barely afford to buy food somehow manage to have mobiles! The mobile therefore, as it is affordable, available and the device of preference for most of the world, is actually far more important as a marketing tool than pretty much anything else.

All the more reason then that when you create a website you need to ensure that it is not only compatible with mobile devices, but actually works very well on that platform! As it can be a highly technical subject, this article just touches the surface, but can hopefully give some assistance on how to make websites mobile for better SEO….

Easier to read at speed

Remembering that when people visit a website on a mobile they are often on the go and want to know something specific pretty quickly. Make sure your landing page is not only attractive but decisive. Don’t waffle – immediately show people how you help them and why they should use you as opposed to anyone else!

Make an easy menu

Make it easy for people to search your website with a sticky menu that has relevant page headings. Don’t expect people to do a lot of scrolling. Be aware that scrolling is not always a mobile kind of mindset. Clicks are preferred, so get a menu that’s easy to use.

Keep colours simpler

All the colours of the rainbow can be great on the larger lap top or PC screen, but small screen devices tend to blur a bit when colours are too over the top. One of the rules of thumb with designing websites for mobiles is, ‘just keep things bolder and simpler!’

….and talking of ‘rule of thumb’…

Remember commands are created on mobile devices with the use of the thumb, so icon buttons need to work for that. Mobile designer Elaine McVicar gives some technical specs: “Ideally, buttons should be between 44px and 57px on a standard screen and 88px to 114px on a high-density (retina) screen. This allows enough area for the average fingertip to easily activate a button.”

Don’t do dividers

Sure, screenshots need to be clearly separated, but dividers are not a good idea on mobile devices. Get a great designer to rather style elements so that they look like division

Make ordering easier

Once again this centres on keeping things simpler. If you are selling something online, make sure that the ordering process is short and sweet. Long 4 page forms and questionnaires are not a good idea.
