Where did it start?
Video live streaming had, like many IT revolutions, a very rapid rise to prominence stating in 2011 when live videos evolved on the ‘YouNow’ live streaming app. By 2014, we already saw the launch of Snapchat and by 2015, Twitter’s ‘Periscope’ was integrated with the social platform in 2016. In that same year Facebook launched ‘Facebook Live’ followed by YouTube announcing live streaming for mobile devices. By 2017, live streaming was available on YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter just to name a few of many social media platforms.
Which platforms hold prominence?
The figures of those platforms that do the most live streaming is fairly even really, with Facebook, surprisingly above U-Tube, being the highest, but only by one percent! The spread of the ‘Big 5’ live streaming kings of the jungle, in fact is not that wide and from Facebook (17%), to U-Tube (16%), to live stories (12%), to periscope and Twitter both on 9%, shows the difference is only 5% – So it’s a close race!
Who’s creating and who’s watching?
Live streaming is mostly watched and created by 18 to 34 year olds, with 13 to 17 year olds running a close second. The younger age group are creating and watching mostly for social purposes and the next age group partly for social and partly for business. The also fairly close race run though by the 35 to 54 year old age category shows they are creating over 20% of all live streaming, which translates to us as a lot of live streaming being created for marketing purposes!
Why is it better than TV?
Research also shows that for the most part it is preferred by online viewers to TV. This is due to the excitement, spontaneity and personal connection that this medium offers. People love the live interaction that live streaming delivers and the real-time experience offered is preferable for modern consumers who are ‘on-the-go’, multi-tasking types.
