We at PS Digital are always looking for ways to advise our valued clients and of course potential clients, on ways to basically ‘simplify’ their Digital and Social Media Marketing.

Human beings are by nature ‘visual’ creatures and the visual medium tends to have far more impact than any other. For this reason display ads are a great favorite and becoming more so as time goes on.

So, for those wanting to embark on a great display ads campaign, we thought it appropriate to give you a few useful rules and guidelines for making magic display ads!

What one needs to remember is that Google has a number of rules and regulations regarding material advertised in its space and so to ensure you are not wasting your valuable creations, bear these points in mind ….

Tech compliance

Your Digital marketing experts will know these things, but as a matter of interest:

  • Animated images must be an animated gif or the right version of ‘Flash’ (swf). They have to run for less than 30 seconds. You can use looping images, but they too have to stop moving at 30 seconds and be no more than five frames per second (fps) for gifs and 20 fps for swf. 150 KB is the maximum file size.
  • Static images have to be a jpg, png, or gif format and in either case the file size can’t be bigger than 150 KB.

Content compliance

As experts with Google Ads campaigns, we understand that the idea is to get clicks, but google has some pretty stringent rules regarding ‘clicks trickery!’…

Some people tend to use all sorts of tricks to get people to click on things that will lead the unsuspecting public to their ads. This is a ‘no go’ with Google. So, here are a few strict rules regarding these ads:

  • The ad has to look different to the rest of the page. Also it must not be what we call ‘tiled’ i.e. looking like more than one image. For example some people use one image to look like 3 different text ads. It’s not allowed.
  • The ad must also be relevant to the page it is being sent to, so don’t trick people into thinking they are clicking to find a car …and they are actually clicking to find a motor repair shop!
  • The image must be High quality (no blurring) and the ad must fill the whole image size – and obviously text must be easy to read!
  • Strobe lights and flashes can be dangerous to some people and so are not allowed on animated ads

Finally, it goes without saying, Google will only tolerate Family rated stuff – anything ‘Risque is also a ‘no go!’

Your ad Designer

Finally, the design of the ad is critical! So many people make the mistake of wasting good money on campaigns that are visually less than pleasing, let alone effective. Unless you are a professional Designer, we at PS Digital really recommend that you use our services, not only to ensure you have a great Google Ads strategy, but to have a display ad that you can be really proud of and will work for you!
